In spite of the traditional (i.e. „classical”) percussion instruments, with its playing techniques and musical language, SCHLAGQUARTETT NO. 1 is a progressive piece. The titles of the movements (ALARM, HYPOCHONDRIA, OSTINATO) hint at the musical structure.
